Every family has its highs and lows—its great memories and its struggles. And when a successful young woman finds herself back home, trying to help her family in the middle of a neighborhood celebration in Block Party, she’s faced with all of the laughter and the challenges.

Block Party returns home to Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Harvard grad Keke McQueen (Antoinette Robertson) after her beloved grandmother, Janice (Margaret Avery), is hospitalized. Janice is working to plan her 40th annual Juneteenth Summer Sizzle Block Party, but as the symptoms of her dementia are increasing, she’s struggling to put the party together on her own. Though she’s supposed to start a new job in a prestigious firm in Atlanta, Keke puts her new job on hold to make Janice’s party a success—but she soon discovers just how bad the situation has gotten.

As this smart, independent young woman works with her spunky grandmother to attempt to secure vendors and hire a famous DJ and pay for all of the necessary permits and set up the whole event in just a few days’ time, she reconnects with a whole lot of old friends and neighbors. This tight-knit community is filled with lovably eccentric characters who have some very strong opinions about Keke’s Summer Sizzle efforts. Some are thrilled that she’s chosen to stay to help her grandmother, while her overbearing mother, Tasha (Golden Brooks), tries to get her on the first flight back to Atlanta.

When all of these friends and neighbors and family members come together, it makes for a fun, energetic comedy—loaded with music and laughs. But there’s more to the story than just the ups and downs of trying to put together a big neighborhood bash. It all comes with a side of family drama, as Keke and the other women in her family struggle with their relationships and expectations.

Along the way, these characters dance together, laugh a little, fight a little, and work to prove themselves to the women around them—just as you’d expect when a family of strong women reunites. And all of the parts—the music, the love, and the humor—come together in a way that’s endearing and entertaining.

Block Party is so full of music and comedy and big personalities that you can’t help but get caught up in Keke’s mission to make this Summer Sizzle one to remember. It’s a fun-filled and entirely lovable comedy that will make you wish you’d grown up in such a vibrant community.

Block Party arrives in select theaters on June 8, 2022, before streaming on BET and BET+ starting on June 16, 2022. For showtimes and tickets, visit JuneteenthBlockParty.com.
