If there’s one thing to be learned from romantic comedies, it’s that the unlikeliest couple—and the most bitter rivals—often get over their rivalries and fall in love. And in Freevee’s rom-com Love Accidentally, a couple of fierce competitors accidentally connect over text while they continue to do battle in the office.

Love Accidentally finds life turned upside-down for Alexa Parker (Brenda Song) on her birthday. First, instead of getting a promotion, she ends up in a competition with her office rival, Jason (Aaron O’Connell). Then her boyfriend takes her to a fancy restaurant and breaks up with her. And as she storms out, she drops her phone in an ice bucket and destroys it. That night, Alexa sends a heartfelt text to her best friend, only to mix up the numbers and text some mystery man instead—a mystery man who just happens to be her nemesis.

As Alexa and Jason fight to be the one to land a big new account and earn the promotion, they have no idea that they’re also building a relationship—and maybe even falling in love—over text. They’re just “Him” and “Her”—a couple of anonymously lonely people who share their stresses and their heartbreaks and their love of Jane Austen late into the night. It can be pretty adorable, though it’s sometimes hard to believe that this arrogant, outspoken guy at the office is the same sweet, thoughtful guy on text.

Meanwhile, while those text messages are the basis of the film’s drama and romance, it doesn’t make for an especially captivating rom-com. The workplace drama and tension eventually fades away almost completely, leaving most of the story to play out between two people who spend the majority of their time talking into their phones. It’s a cute concept—but one that might work a little better as a book.

Along the way, though, these characters grow and change and become a little more human—and more likable. The two different sides of the relationship make for a charming story, but the minimal tension and the lack of real chemistry between the characters keep it from being a truly memorable film.

Of course, if you’re a sucker for love and laughter, this unremarkable rom-com could be worth watching on a low-key night at home—especially since you can stream it for free. But because of its awkward execution, it’s not likely to end up in your regular rom-com rotation.

Love Accidentally begins streaming for free on Amazon’s Freevee on July 15, 2022.
