The relationship between siblings can be close—or it can be tense. But in the sibling thriller Where’s Rose, a once strong bond between an older brother and his little sister falls apart when it becomes clear that the little girl has brought something dark and troubling into their house.

Where’s Rose finds a family in crisis as oldest son Eric (Ty Simpkins) is preparing to leave for college. His younger sister, Rose (Skyler Elyse Philpot), is struggling with the change, leaning on an imaginary friend for support. One night, Rose goes missing. The family searches frantically for her—and when she’s found again, Eric realizes that something about her is not quite right. She’s not Rose. And with just days to go before he starts his new life, he tries to figure out what to do about the evil that’s come home in her place.

After Rose returns home, things about her seem a little bit off—and not just her sudden aversion to bacon. Nothing about her behavior seems natural—and the occasional snarling, the not-so-subtle threats, and the way her eyes sometimes turn all black make it pretty obvious that something here has gone horribly wrong.

At the same time, though, it also seems as though there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. Not only has Rose turned absolutely creepy, but there’s some unspoken tension between Eric and neighbor Jessica (Anneliese Judge), who was supposed to be watching Rose when she went missing. Admittedly, at times, you might wonder whether there’s really more something going on here or if the actors are just unable to show any real emotion—because the characters who aren’t hysterical and over-the-top seem strangely flat, spending a lot of the movie staring blankly into the distance.

Still, what plays out as simply creepy and perplexing for most of the movie eventually builds into something more. As the truth of the situation starts coming out, it’s dark and disturbing. And though parts of the plot are still rather puzzling in the end, the suddenly gripping conclusion brings everything together in a way that’s appropriately chilling.

In general, Where’s Rose is a dark, eerie thriller that doesn’t always make a lot of sense. It will definitely keep audiences on edge, though, wondering what’s going on—and what’s coming next. And it does tend to (somewhat) redeem itself in the end. So if you’re looking for some chills to keep you awake at night, this makes for a creepy pick.

You can find Where’s Rose in theaters beginning on July 29, 2022—or on demand starting on August 30, 2022.
