The closer we get to Halloween, the more viewers are looking for Halloween-themed spooky movies for their weekend entertainment. Those who have already seen Hocus Pocus 2 at least once may be ready for other silly supernatural scares—like the action and laughs of Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow leaves Brooklyn and moves to an idyllic small town with Sydney (Priah Ferguson) and her family after a job opens up for her science teacher dad, Howard (Marlon Wayans). The town loves decorating for the holidays—especially Halloween—and Syd is eager to join in the spooky fun, much to her skeptical dad’s dismay. But when Syd accidentally unleashes a spirit that possesses the town’s Halloween decorations, bringing them to life and threatening to wreak havoc on the town forever, she has to team up with her dad to stop it.

Right from the start, though, these two clash. Sydney is the typical headstrong teenager. She’s always been told what to do, and now she’s ready (and determined) to embrace her own interests. She’s sick of science club, and she’s excited about the town’s spooky festivities and fascinated by the supernatural. So when kids from school tell her about her new home’s haunting past, she’s eager to explore the eerie old attic. Her dad, meanwhile, wants nothing to do with anything that can’t be explained with science, so he laughs off the neighbor’s decorations and his daughter’s insistence that there’s something evil lurking in the streets—until he finds himself dodging flying witches and battling killer clowns in the school gym.

As this father-daughter duo bickers through town, fighting zombies and skeleton football players and gigantic spiders, the supernatural action offers plenty of Halloween scares. Those red-eyed killer clowns alone are nightmare worthy. But cast members like Marlon Wayans and Rob Riggle make sure to keep viewers laughing through the screams, too. The action is definitely over the top and generally silly—and there’s nothing really new or surprising here. But while it may be a little scary for the younger members of the family, older kids will enjoy the creepy campiness.

As Halloween approaches, families may be looking for some new options for family movie night. The Curse of Bridge Hollow most likely won’t turn out to be a new favorite, but the Halloween action and humor make it worth adding to this year’s watch list.

Round up the family for the Halloween scares of The Curse of Bridge Hollow on Netflix beginning on October 14, 2022.
