Some heist movies are stylish and flashy, following a crew of trained (and impossibly good-looking) criminals as the pull off an elaborate scheme. But there’s nothing slick or flashy about Four Samosas—a comic caper following four first-time criminals as they plan an ill-advised diamond heist.

Four Samosas causes chaos in LA’s Little India with would-be South Asian rapper Vinny (Venk Potula), who’s heartbroken when he discovers that his ex-girlfriend, Rina (Summer Bishil), is engaged to goat dung expert Sanjay (Karan Soni). In order to throw a wrench in their upcoming nuptials, Vinny decides get a crew together to steal Rina’s wedding diamonds from her father’s grocery store—claiming that they’re “dirty diamonds.” And with the help of his Bollywood-loving bestie, an eager young journalist, and a disgruntled immigrant engineer, he prepares for the most poorly-planned heist that Little India has ever seen.

As they set out to steal priceless gems that Vinny claims are of questionable origin, these uncommon diamond thieves all get more than they bargained for. They take on militant neighbors in their search for tools. They dress up in ridiculous costumes. And they find love and friendship—and learn a little about themselves, too. Audiences will fall in love with these adorably bumbling characters, each with their own loves and passions—whether they’re passionate about Bollywood productions, uncovering the truth, or just snack foods.

In the midst of meeting the characters and planning this wild and crazy caper, Four Samosas sometimes gives off an almost Clerks-like vibe, with the same chattiness and eccentric characters, a similar filmmaking style, and the same small community feel. But instead of offering black-and-white footage of a convenience store in Jersey, it welcomes viewers into this vibrant community, with its sari shops and chicken tikka pizzas, its historical dramatizations and meditation. And the neighborhood’s personality adds energy and color to this playful story.

Though the heist is at the center of the film, there’s just so much more to it. Sure, it follows the adventures of these four amateur crooks—and that brings plenty of wacky, slapsticky comedy. But it’s also about the characters and their lives in this close community—and that makes it even more fun.

With its colorful characters, its wacky heist, and a setting that’s already brimming with its own personality, Four Samosas is a lovable and fun-filled comedy about love, crime, and finding your crew. If you’re in the mood for something out of the ordinary, this one’s worth checking out.
