Sometimes, just when we think we have our plans all figured out, life throws us a curveball—and we end up on a completely unexpected path. In the French comedy Kitchen Brigade, an up-and-coming chef finds her life turned upside-down in a way that she didn’t realize she needed.

Kitchen Brigade takes a new job with Cathy Marie (Audrey Lamy), a sous-chef who dreams of running her own kitchen. But when she leaves her job at a posh restaurant in Paris, the only job available to her is in the cafeteria of a hostel for young migrant boys. Reluctantly, Cathy takes the job, turning this dirty kitchen filled with canned ravioli into a gourmet restaurant with a team of hard-working young assistants. And as she builds relationships with these remarkable teenagers, Cathy finds new inspiration and begins to dream new dreams.

Of course, when Cathy first arrives at the hostel, her situation looks pretty hopeless. The kitchen is a disaster. The food is cheap and processed. And her living arrangements are far from ideal. But with the encouragement of her best friend, she decides to make the most of it—to turn the kitchen into something that lives up to her standards. Along the way, she faces a whole lot of challenges—and she’s forced to take a different approach than she would in an upscale restaurant. But while she’s transforming the lives of the boys who agree to help out in her kitchen, she finds her own life transformed as well.

Though Cathy may be a little prickly at first, viewers will immediately fall in love with the hostel’s young residents. All have left their countries—and their families—in search of a better life. They’re not afraid of hard work, and they’re eager to learn. Like their chef, they take pride in their work—and as they follow their demanding boss’s orders, many of them find that they share her passion for preparing gourmet dishes for the other residents of the hostel.

Together, these characters and their story make for an undeniably charming feel-good film. Though it takes an unexpected twist in the end that seems to come out of nowhere, it comes together to tell a story that’s sweet and funny and heartwarming, too.

Kitchen Brigade is just the thing to lift your spirits after another long work week. It’s a lovable tale about going after your dreams—even when your life seems to be heading in the wrong direction.

You can find Kitchen Brigade in select theaters and on demand starting on January 13, 2023.
