In Chicken Run, a band of clever chickens executed a plan to escape from Mrs. Tweedy’s farm. Now, 23 years after their last adventure, they find themselves battling a new threat at a new farm in the sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget finds Ginger and Rocky (voiced by Thandiwe Newton and Zachary Levi) settled into a comfortable life with their chicken friends and their daughter, Molly (Bella Ramsey), on an island far from evil humans. But Molly grows up to be a lot like her mother—and her sense of adventure can’t be satisfied on the island. And when Molly runs away and ends up on a chicken farm run by the sinister Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson), Ginger and Rocky and their friends set out to bring her home.

When Molly arrives at Fun-Land Farms with her new friend, Frizzle (Josie Sedgwick-Davies), it seems like a chicken’s paradise. It’s bright and vibrant and cheery in all of its playful Aardman Animations glory, with fun and games and all the seed they can eat. But it’s not long before Molly realizes that something about the farm just isn’t right. So as her parents are trying to break into the farm to find her, she’s working devising her own plan to break herself and the others out.

What follows, then, is a whole lot of imaginative action, as the chickens bumble their way through one plan after another. There are a whole bunch of personalities here, working together to save Molly from Mrs. Tweedy’s latest evil plot. But audiences will love Molly and Ginger for their shared strength, determination, and love of a good adventure.

This latest Aardman claymation feature has the same colorful animation, the same silly sense of humor, and the same lovable characters that viewers have come to expect—but nothing especially new or surprising. It isn’t as flashy as the typical animated movie—and it isn’t the studio’s best. But Aardman fans will enjoy catching up with Ginger and the rest of the chickens as they get another chance to face off against Mrs. Tweedy.

These funny feathered friends and their antics make Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget an action-packed pick for family movie night. Unless you’re a big Aardman fan, it isn’t a must-see, but if you need a little downtime in the midst of the hectic holiday season, it’s more than enough to keep the kids entertained for a while.

Your family can join these feathered friends in their fight when Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget arrives on Netflix on December 15, 2023.
