For those battling addiction, rehab can be a difficult experience that nevertheless offers hope for a better future. But in The Clinic by Cate Quinn, a young woman suspects that something dark and threatening is happening at a rehab clinic for the rich and famous—so she checks herself in to find answers.

The story follows a troubled woman’s quest to uncover the truth about her sister’s death. Meg works undercover in a casino, playing poker and catching cheaters. She’s just barely holding on, thanks to her oxy addiction—and the news of her sister Haley’s death almost puts her over the edge. Haley, a popular singer turned actress, was in an exclusive rehab facility when she died—and though the police are calling it a suicide, Meg doesn’t believe that Haley would kill herself. So she decides to check herself into the clinic to find out what really happened.

At The Clinic, in a luxurious estate hidden away far from the nearest town, Meg is surrounded by the rich and famous—actors and rock stars and models who have been given one last chance to get clean—and they’re all suspects. But while she’s there to investigate Haley’s death, no one knows her true identity—and that means that she’s forced to go through all of the therapy sessions and treatments that any other patient would experience. And that’s when things take a dark turn.

Everything about this mystery is eerie and haunting. It’s a story filled with desperate, troubled characters who are undergoing some questionable treatments in an attempt to cure their addictions. Everyone here has secrets. Everyone is lying about something. Readers will start to question what’s true, what’s a lie, and what’s just a result of the jumble of flashbacks and hallucinations caused by the patients’ treatments—and that certainly makes it a suspenseful read.

Eventually, everything is revealed—all of the secrets about the patients, the staff, and what’s really going on at The Clinic. In general, it feels a little messy. There’s just too much going on here. And that messiness makes the conclusion feel less than satisfying. But the journey that Meg takes to uncover the truth about her sister, her past, and this exclusive facility is definitely captivating.

With The Clinic, readers will definitely get a sense of the chaos and confusion of rehab—with the extra twist of some criminal activity. It’s a fascinating read, but the excess of secrets and revelations takes away from the main storyline.
