No matter what we may have planned for our life, when we fall in love, it often takes us in a direction that we never expected. And in This Disaster Loves You by Richard Roper, a man recalls the twists and turns of his own love story while he searches for his long-lost wife.

The story finds pub owner Brian still struggling to get by nearly seven years after his wife’s sudden disappearance. Ever since Lily left their apartment one morning without a word, Brian has been holding out hope that she’ll return—but, other than one post card in the days following her disappearance, no one’s heard from her. But then, with the anniversary of her disappearance looming, Brian discovers a TripAdvisor account that he’s convinced is hers. So Brian sets out on a quest to follow her reviews and reunite with the woman he’s always loved.

When Brian ventures out to follow the clues that he’s convinced will lead him to his missing wife, he ends up in the middle of a kind of pilgrimage of heartbroken women, who are retracing the steps found in a popular book about one woman’s journey to healing and empowerment. He meets Tess, an outgoing New Zealander who’s on her own healing journey—and she agrees to help him. Together, they find themselves on all kinds of unexpected—and often humorous—adventures. And over drinks at the end of the day, they laugh about their day while also opening up about their stories of love and heartbreak.

Readers can’t help but fall in love with Brian, this lovable mess of a man who’s so lost without the love of his life that he simply gets up and goes through the motions—day after day, year after year—waiting for her return. Throughout the story, he reminisces about their relationship—about the night they met, the ups and downs of their years together, and the morning that changed everything. And though Brian’s journey definitely has its lighthearted moments, his is a deeply moving (not to mention mysterious) story about the wild twists and turns that life often takes—about the messiness of love and loss and healing.

This Disaster Loves You isn’t the story that you may expect. What starts out to be a lovable kind of romantic comedy turns out to be surprisingly sweet and heartfelt. It’s an entertaining and often emotional journey that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
