When we’re young, we have big dreams for the future—but as we get older, we often lose sight of those big dreams. But in The Neon Highway, a singer whose dreams of country stardom got lost in a growing stack of bills gets a second chance to make them come true.

The Neon Highway stars Rob Mayes has Wayne Collins, a once-aspiring country singer-songwriter who gave up on his dreams after a disastrous trip to Nashville seven years ago. But when he’s called out to set up an internet connection for country legend Claude Allen (Beau Bridges), he decides to give it one more try. Inspired by the chance to get back in the game, Claude agrees to work with Wayne to record one of his songs and get in on the air. But once they arrive back in Nashville, they face one setback after another.

Though his chance meeting with Claude may have seemed like the perfect opportunity to break into the country music scene, Wayne quickly discovers that, while his new partner makes a lot of promises, nothing goes as he promised.

Once Wayne’s song pulls him out of his rut, Claude is a larger-than-life character from a completely different time. He’s brash and outspoken and unrestrained—a self-assured member of the Old Boys’ Club. He doesn’t believe in calling and making appointments; he believes in walking into offices and demanding to be seen—or waiting in parking lots until the right person shows up. He’s cantankerous and a little bit crazy—and it’s no wonder that few in the industry are happy to see him back in town.

As Wayne tries to move forward with Claude (and sometimes in spite of him), there are plenty of mishaps, some late-night partying, and a whole lot of music. And while Claude isn’t always an especially likable character, viewers will hope that he’ll be able to pull something together for his hard-working partner. At times, it gets a little too caught up in the drama—and it gets a little too heavy in the end—but the cast comes through to give it plenty of charm.

You don’t have to be a country music fan to appreciate this feel-good story about an everyday guy just trying to provide for his family. The Neon Highway may get a little sidetracked at times, but it’s still a likable story about fighting to make your dreams come true.

You can sing along with this would-be country star when The Neon Highway arrives in select theaters on March 15, 2024.
