Memories can be a blessing or a curse. They can cause us to reminisce about the good times or struggle to heal from the bad ones. But in Sleeping Dogs, a former cop wrestles with the fact that he can’t remember anything—not his life, the people he cares about, nor the case that he’s been asked to reopen.

Sleeping Dogs stars Russell Crowe as Roy Freeman, a former detective who’s undergoing experimental treatments for his worsening Alzheimer’s. Roy is approached by an organization that’s advocating for a convicted murderer who’s just days from execution, asking him to help prove the man’s innocence. And though he can’t remember the details of this 10-year-old case, he looks back at the files and tracks down the people who were involved, hoping to uncover the truth. But as his memories slowly begin to return, he realizes that there are more secrets and cover-ups to this case than he expected.

Determined to right some of the wrongs from his past, this troubled ex-cop sets out to find the answers that could save a condemned man’s life. His investigation leads him to a former research assistant who didn’t feel she got the credit she deserved, a dead writer who was set on exposing the truth, and even to his own partner, who clearly knows more than he’s saying. No matter how many people try to tell Roy to leave it alone—to go home and get some rest—he can’t shake the fact that something here just doesn’t add up. And Crowe’s character is gruff and gritty and more than a little desperate to keep his mind working—and he’s not the kind of guy to let things go.

Admittedly, many aspects of Roy’s situation require a suspension of disbelief—especially if you’ve loved someone with Alzheimer’s—and there’s a good chance that you’ll start putting the pieces together well before Roy does (especially if you’re a little cynical and watch too many movies). But if you let yourself get caught up in the story, you’ll enjoy following Roy as he battles his unreliable memory in an attempt to retrace his steps to figure out what really happened 10 years ago. It may not be a flawless whodunit, but it’s a captivating film nonetheless.

If you love following a character through a twisting investigation, thinking through the clues, and solving the mystery, Sleeping Dogs will give you plenty to think about. It’s all a little over-the-top, but Crowe’s character makes it an intriguing story of secrets and lies and murder.

You can join Roy’s search for the truth when Sleeping Dogs arrives in theaters on March 22, 2024.
