Life often takes us in directions that we didn’t plan—and sometimes we find ourselves hitting rock bottom, unsure of how to fight our way back up. And Unsung Hero follows one family’s journey through heartbreak and hardship to remarkable success through the strength of one woman who refused to give up.

Unsung Hero tells the true story of the Smallbone family’s struggle to get back on their feet again after an economic crash left them with nothing. In 1991, dad David (Joel Smallbone) lost his business as a successful concert promoter in Australia—and his only hope of starting over was to move to Nashville for a deal that fell through before they even arrived at their new home. But with little money and a family of eight—and one more on the way—mom Helen (Daisy Betts) fought to keep her family strong.

It isn’t easy to start over in a new place, thousands of miles away from your support system. But the Smallbone family found themselves in a new country with no income, no prospects, and a house with no furniture. Yet through the kindness of some new friends at the local church and the family’s determination to work together and do whatever they needed to do, they were able to stay afloat.

While the story may gloss over some of the family’s challenges and frustration, isn’t all sunshine and roses. This isn’t just one big, happy family rallying together with smiles on their faces to make it work. David struggles to let go of his pride and battle through depression to keep moving forward, and Helen struggles to carry the heavy emotional weight of their situation—even after committing to a move that she didn’t want to make in the first place.

Admittedly, the film does sometimes take on a melodramatic tone, but it’s effective nonetheless. Viewers will fall in love with this family of characters while following them though the highs and lows of their journey. Their moving story of faith and determination is pretty remarkable. And when they finally get the break that turns their lives around, you’ll want to have the tissues handy.

Unsung Hero tells an uplifting and inspiring true story of one family’s hardships—and one strong woman’s refusal to give up on her family’s dreams. It’s a sweet tear-jerker of a film that you’ll want to take your own loving, hard-working mom to see.

You (and your mom) can follow this family on their journey when Unsung Hero arrives in theaters on April 26, 2024.
