Sometimes, it’s just easier to play by the rules than it is to break away and follow our own heart. That’s just too scary. And in The Heirloom by Jessie Rosen, a woman who’s always played by the rules struggles to follow her heart into the future she’s always dreamed of.

The story finds Shea Anderson trying to choose between superstition and true love. All her life, Shea has lived by her Italian grandmother’s strict rules for living. So when John the love of Shea’s life, proposes with an heirloom ring—which goes against Nonna’s rules for a happy life—Shea panics. Though she loves John, she can’t get beyond her Nonna’s old superstition. So before she can put the ring on her finger, Shea decides to investigate the story behind the ring—to ensure that it will pass on the right kind of energy.

With the help of her older sister and a journalist who’s hoping that her investigation will uncover something noteworthy, Shea travels from her home in Los Angeles to New York—and then to Italy and Portugal and beyond—to uncover the ring’s history. It makes for a captivating mystery, with layers upon layers of love and loss—and just when it seems as though Shea has uncovered the truth about the ring and its past, a new clue sends her down a completely different path.

Shea’s journey is filled with love stories and surprises and fascinating characters—but as she tries to satisfy her Nonna’s superstitions, she learns that her fears go so much deeper than just her need to follow her grandmother’s old rules for living. And as she traces the ring’s history, she also takes the time to consider her own past, exploring the pain and trauma of her childhood.

The Heirloom isn’t the same old breezy romance. It’s also a gripping mystery and a globe-trotting adventure that will make readers want to board a plane and see the world. But, even more than that, it’s a thoughtful story about the need to unpack and explore our own pain and fears and allow ourselves to move forward into the happiness we deserve.

Though the story is built around a romantic proposal and a stunning engagement ring, The Heirloom isn’t a sweet, predictable romance. It’s challenging and unexpected—a moving story of understanding the past and healing old wounds in order to embrace the future.
