Weddings may be happy occasions, but they also tend to be stressful ones—with the bride and groom and their friends and family members scrambling to make everything just right. And when everything goes wrong for two couples in You’re Cordially Invited, their families go to war.
You’re Cordially Invited travels to a tiny island, where two families both think they’ve reserved the entire resort for a wedding celebration. Jim (Will Ferrell) is a widowed dad who wants to give his daughter, Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan), the wedding of her dreams. And Margot (Reese Witherspoon) is a reality TV producer who’s planned every detail of the big day for her little sister, Neve (Meredith Hagner). But when the resort ends up double-booked, the two families have to try to work together to give both brides the perfect wedding weekend.
Jim and Margot may originally agree to compromise—splitting up the resort’s halls and outdoor spaces while dividing the time for ceremonies and receptions—but, of course, everything quickly spins out of control as the two families are caught up both in their own family drama and in their competition with the other wedding party. While Margot struggles to endure her sister’s non-stop complaints and her mother’s constant criticism while keeping her family’s celebrations as prim and proper as their Southern upbringing dictates, the other party is wild and raucous and incredibly loud. Yet, no matter how hard Margot tries to please her family, Jim instantly charms them all—which Margot finds absolutely infuriating. And as soon as she lashes out in frustration, the first shots are fired—and the rest of the wedding weekend is all-out war.
What begins as messy and tense and complicated soon spirals into absolute comic chaos as Margot and Jim sabotage each other’s plans—with each attack becoming more and more outrageous. But while it starts out as a fun-filled comedy, it eventually wears out its welcome, shifting from silly to mean-spirited and destructive—not to mention longer than necessary. And if you’ve ever planned a wedding of your own, it may just stress you out and leave you feeling bad for the two couples who end up stuck in the middle of the wedding wars.
Thanks to its two lovable stars, You’re Cordially Invited is good for some brainless laughs—but as it gets messier and more chaotic, the comedy crumbles right along with the couples’ dreams of the perfect wedding weekend.
You can RSVP for the comic chaos when You’re Cordially Invited arrives on Prime Video on January 30, 2025.
