As the temperatures continue to rise and the kids finish up another school year, it’s time to stock up on easygoing beach reads for summer days in the sun. And author Katherine Center fills her latest rom-com, The Love Haters, with all of the elements that readers want in their next summer read.
The story travels to Key West with video producer Katie Vaughn. Katie knows that her company is making cuts—and her job is on the line. So when her coworker Cole offers her a job filming a promotional video for the Coast Guard, profiling Cole’s heroic brother, rescue swimmer Hutch, she can’t say no—even if it means lying about the fact that she can’t swim. She’s determined to learn to swim and produce the best video ever—but she doesn’t expect the trip to change her perspective on...just about everything.
Everything about Key West is so very different for Katie. She instantly goes from life in the city and an all-black wardrobe to a resort town where everyone dresses in vibrant colors while lounging by the pool. She checks into a cabin owned by Cole and Hutch’s aunt, Rue, and is immediately welcomed by the outgoing—and outspoken—retirees who live in some of the other cabins. It’s a new way of life for this straight-laced city girl—and a chance to work through the self-image issues that she’s battled most of her life.
As Katie spends her days learning about the Coast Guard and her evenings taking swimming lessons from strong, handsome Hutch and eating dinner with Rue and her friends, readers will almost be able to feel the warm, tropical breeze of the resort-town setting. The lovable characters give it a fun, playful feel—and the budding romance between Katie and her subject adds a little extra warmth to the coastal setting. Of course, there are questions and conflicts along the way, but it all comes together just as it should in the end. You won’t find anything especially surprising or inspiring here, but it’s a charming summer read about finding yourself—while maybe finding love in the process.
Katherine Center is one of my favorite beach read authors—and in The Love Haters, she blends charming characters with just a little bit of chaos and drama and romance and sets it all at a quirky resort by the beach to give readers everything that’s needed for a light and enjoyable summer rom-com.
