Through the years, many literature lovers have found themselves dreaming of starring in their own Jane Austen romantic comedy. And in the French romance Jane Austen Wrecked My Life (Jane Austen a gâché ma vie), a conflicted bookseller finds herself in the middle of a love triangle worthy of one of Austen’s novels.
Jane Austen Wrecked My Life searches for happiness and love with Agathe (Camille Rutherford), an aspiring writer who works at the legendary Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris during the day and struggles to complete a novel at night. When her best friend and coworker, Félix (Pablo Pauly), gets her an invitation to the Jane Austen Residency—a two-week retreat hosted by the late author’s family—she feels unworthy of the opportunity. And as she remains blocked, she wrestles with her feelings for both her best friend and Oliver (Charlie Anson), her hosts’ moody son.
From the streets and shops of Paris to the lush English countryside, this picturesque romance follows the adorably awkward writer as she reluctantly sets out to chase her dream of becoming a published author—someone who does readings at Shakespeare and Company instead of just someone who stocks the shelves. Agathe is such a charming character: a thoughtful sister, a playful aunt, a fun-loving friend, and a bookish sales clerk who has a Jane Austen recommendation for every situation. She’s the kind of relatable, everyday character who trips over her feet while dancing in the woods—who suffers from grief and anxieties and imposter syndrome.
Though you don’t have to love Jane Austen’s novels to enjoy this charming rom-com, fans will definitely appreciate some of the film’s fitting touches—from the country house setting to the residency’s romantic tension-filled ball, which marks the beginning of the character’s big turning point. The story may not feel as grand or as timeless or as swoon-worthy as some of Austen’s beloved novels, but fans will still fall in love with the endearing characters, the beautiful settings, and the romantic tale of healing your heart while following your dreams—and somehow finding love in the process.
For fans of rom-coms and classic literature, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is a sweet and lovable romance. It’s the kind of movie that will put a smile on your face at the end of a tiring day—while reminding you that it’s never too late to go after your dreams.
You can join Agathe on her quest for love and publication when Jane Austen Wrecked My Life expands to theaters nationwide on May 30, 2025.
