When Katniss Everdeen volunteered as District 12’s tribute in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, she was given a less-than-ideal mentor: loud, bitter, drunken former champion Haymitch Abernathy. And the audio edition of the latest Hunger Games novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, takes a step back to tell Haymitch’s story.

The story begins as the people of Panem prepare for the fiftieth Hunger Games. In honor of the second Quarter Quell, President Snow has decreed that twice the normal number of tributes will be chosen: two girls and two boys from each district. After chaos erupts during the reaping in District 12, Haymitch finds himself selected as one of the district’s four tributes. But while he’s heartbroken over those left behind—his mother, his younger brother, and the love of his life, Lenore Dove—something in him also wants to fight against the Capitol and their injustices.

Haymitch wasn’t supposed to be sent to the Games. His name wasn’t drawn in the Reaping. But after a violent outburst caused Haymitch to stand up to the Peacekeepers to protect Lenore Dove, he was chosen as the next tribute—set up to die in the arena as punishment for speaking up. But as Haymitch is sent to the Capitol with the others from District 12—a young girl who’s like a sister to him, an oddsmaker whose family is most likely collecting bets on his demise, and a spoiled shop owner’s daughter—he’s inspired by his love to rebel, to refuse to be a pawn in the latest Games.

As in his previous appearances in the series, Haymitch is a complicated character—a prickly guy with a good heart. He knows that the Capitol expects him and the other tributes from District 12 to die in the arena—just four more deaths to televise to the nation as proof of the Capitol’s great power. But he decides not to go down without a fight—and without sending a message. From preparations to his time in the arena, his story is full of suspense and drama—a story that will keep you listening long after you meant to take a break. And when this emotional story comes to an end, you’ll have a better understanding of the Haymitch of later Games.

Like other Hunger Games novels, Sunrise on the Reaping is a powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and rebellion. It’s a captivating way to pass the time on your daily commute—or your daily walk.
