Superheroes come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Some are otherworldly gods. Some are billionaires with a fancy suit. Some were just bitten by a radioactive spider. And in the animated superhero comedy Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-shero, all of drag-queendom depends on a drag queen with a magical wig.

Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-shero follows the adventures of shy barista Simon (voiced by Grant Hodges), whose life changes forever on his 21st birthday. When his boss sends him out into the alley to take out the trash, he comes in contact with a magical pink wig that instantly changes his look. When he goes out to a club that night to celebrate with his best friend, he’s transformed into Maxxie LaWow, a strong, confident drag queen with her own theme song. And when drag queens begin to go missing, Maxxie sets out to save the day.

Maxxie’s investigation takes her to the home of Dyna Bolical (Terren Wooten Clark), a failed fashionista who’s trying to make up for her failures by developing a facial serum that uses the age-defying qualities of drag queen tears. Everything about her wild and colorful adventure is completely over-the-top—from the characters to their style to the silly story—and that’s what makes it just plain fun to watch.

Simon’s journey definitely isn’t the typical superhero origin story. He goes from serving up glittery unicorn lattes and mixing up his words whenever his cute customer comes for his daily coffee to captivating crowds at the club and taking on a sinister plot. Instead of a radioactive spider or a mechanical super suit, there’s an otherworldly pink wig. And instead of facing off with the villain for an explosive fight to the death on the city streets, Maxxie’s chosen battle is a lip sync battle.

As you might expect about an animated action movie starring a drag queen, nothing about this crime-fighting adventure is the least bit serious. The animation is simple but vibrant, giving each of the queens her own style and personality—and the story is clever and silly, with plenty of music and just the occasional touch of innuendo mixed into its kooky comedy. Maxxie may not be joining the Avengers anytime soon—but she’d definitely liven up the bunch if she did.

Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-shero isn’t the same old superhero thriller—but it borrows from superhero movies while giving the typical formulas a bold and over-the-top drag queen twist. It’s stylish and playful and quirky—a fun pick for your Pride Month viewing.

You can join Maxxie on her mission when Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-shero arrives in select theaters and on demand on June 20, 2025.
