Love can sometimes make people do things they never thought they’d be capable of doing—whether that means making a big, public gesture or keeping a dark secret. And in One Yellow Eye by Leigh Radford, a brilliant scientist does the unthinkable in order to save the man she loves.

The story finds British pathologist Kesta Shelley holding on to a secret that could end more than just her career. As London recovers from a mysterious zombie outbreak—having gotten rid of all of the infected—Kesta fights for a job with Project Dawn, a super-secret laboratory that’s researching the virus and working to find a cure. For Kesta’s coworkers, the lack of progress is frustrating—but it’s devastating to Kesta, who’s keeping her infected husband, Tim, chained up and locked away in the spare room of their apartment until she finds the cure that will save him.

Though everyone believes that Kesta’s erratic behavior is that of a grieving widow who lost her beloved husband to the virus, she’s secretly fighting for her husband’s survival, stealing the medication to keep him stable and sedated until Kesta and her colleagues can find a cure. But the longer the process continues, the more Kesta struggles to hold on. She stops going to her support group. She barely eats or sleeps. She just sits beside the monster that was once the man she loves, refusing to let go.

Kesta’s story is more than just a gripping sci-fi thriller that follows a team of scientists as they race to find the cause and cure of a deadly outbreak. That part of the novel is definitely captivating and suspenseful—and it’s sure to keep readers turning pages late into the night as the team at Project Dawn races to find answers. But it’s also an emotional story of love and loss—about what we’ll do to hold on to the ones we love. The combination of tension and drama makes it a complicated and surprisingly compelling read—a constant spiral of science and obsession, following a woman who just can’t stop fighting for the love of her life.

Dark and haunting and often gruesome—yet movingly dramatic, too—One Yellow Eye is an entirely captivating tale of the power of love to push us to fight through the most challenging of times. It’s the kind of story that will grab you from the start and refuse to let go.
