Couples spend months (and sometimes even years) planning the perfect wedding—a day filled with joy and romance, music, food, and friends. But in Going Overboard by Portia MacIntosh, a young woman is dumped at a wedding, only to be forced to deal with her ex at one wedding after another.
The story finds Jessa’s perfectly comfortable life brought to a screeching halt at her friends’ wedding, when her boyfriend, Todd, breaks up with her in the middle of the first dance. Just two weeks later, at another wedding, Todd is there with his new girlfriend, Nikki, who also just broke up with her cricket-player boyfriend, Brody. Unfortunately, there’s one more wedding to go: Jessa’s best friend’s destination wedding. And when she boards the cruise ship to the wedding in Sicily, she discovers that she’s been assigned to a two-bedroom suite with Todd and Nikki and Brody.
In order to survive their days onboard, Jessa and Brody agree to fake a steamy whirlwind romance as a way of getting revenge on their exes. They have a whole lot of fun pretending to be in love—flirting and joking and getting up every morning to go to the gym together—and watching their exes seethe with annoyance that they’ve managed to move on in such a big, obvious way. Their often over-the-top displays, along with Todd and Nikki’s reactions, give the story plenty of laughs—as do Jessa’s frequent mishaps. But, of course, that’s just the beginning. This wouldn’t be a rom-com without this fake romance showing hints of something more—and while Jessa keeps telling herself that Brody is annoying and totally not her type, her friends keep pointing out how happy she looks.
From Jessa’s first awkward encounter with Brody, the story’s direction is clear—yet the author makes the journey wildly entertaining. Jessa and Brody are lovable characters—perfect opposites, of course—who seem to get into all kinds of hilarious situations (often involving fountains...or swimming pools). And the excitement of the ship—with its pools and casinos and restaurants—adds to the fun of the story as Jessa and Brody cruise their way through their fake romance.
Even if you’re stuck at home this summer, Going Overboard will make you feel like you’re on a luxurious getaway as it takes you out to sea for a fun- and mishap-filled (not-so-)fake romance. Readers will fall in love with the characters and get caught up in their wedding-week adventures.
