Many of us look back fondly on our childhood—on those long summer days of playing outside with friends, creating our own imaginary worlds. But when a group of kids find their imaginary world threatened in Robin and the Hoods, they decide to fight back.

Robin and the Hoods explores a magical land known as The Kingdom, where 11-year-old Robin (Darcey Ewart) leads a loyal band of warriors known as The Hoods. Each day, Robin and her friends meet in their neighborhood’s wooded vacant lot to wage war against The Knights, who want to steal Robin’s crown and take control of The Kingdom. So when a greedy property developer (Naomie Harris) arrives in their neighborhood to announce a fancy new development, complete with shopping centers and a gym, the kids work together to try to stop her plan from moving forward.

While their parents are initially taken in by the promise of spa treatments and daycare centers, telling the kids that it’s too late to do anything about it, the children refuse to give up. And from the oldest to the youngest—from the fearless warriors to The Kingdom’s resident wizard—Robin’s friends brainstorm ways to hold on to the land that means so much to them. It’s an inspiring story about children stepping up to make a difference and save the natural spaces that allow them the opportunity to get outside and use their imagination.

More than that, though, it’s playful and clever and even a little bit magical, blending footage straight from the children’s imagination—complete with knights in shining armor and a woodland fortress—with reality. Battle scenes move back and forth, from grand action sequences with young warriors on horses to a bunch of kids running through the woods in hoodies and bicycle helmets. There are times when the melodrama gets to be a little over-the-top—and there’s one rather questionable scene when the hippie woman who lives in the woods (Gwendolyn Christie) smokes her magical “memory potion” to help her remember something from the past. But, overall, it’s just a fun and creative adventure that will spark young viewers’ imagination.

In a time when kids spend more time staring at screens than playing outside, Robin and the Hoods is a fun-filled feel-good film that will make them want to create their own imaginary world like Robin’s. And that alone is enough to make it a good choice for your next family movie night.

You can join the fight for The Kingdom when Robin and the Hoods arrives on digital platforms on August 27, 2025.
