Every day, millions of people around the world find themselves fighting for survival while living on the streets, doing whatever it takes to make it through another day. But in the Indian crime thriller 55, a clever young pickpocket is faced with the outcome of his crimes—and he sets out to try to make things right.

55 tells the story of an orphaned teen (Rizwan Shaikh) who leads a group of pickpockets who work their way through the crowds in a busy train station in Mumbai. Without an identity of his own, 55 keeps the IDs of those he robs—and he often walks alone through the city streets at night, looking inside the windows of his victims’ homes. And when he discovers that one of them has killed himself after losing the money he’d borrowed for his daughter’s dowry, 55 is determined to make it right.

For as long as he can remember, 55 has been living with a gang of unwanted kids under the control of the ruthless Sagar Bhai (Emraan Hashmi)—but he doesn’t want to live this life of crime forever. He’s the kind of character that you can’t help but care about: the lovable troublemaker with a heart of gold. He picks pockets because he has no choice; he does what he has to do to stay alive—and he does it well. But while the other boys are taking their cut and spending it on the streets, 55 is stashing his away, dreaming about one day escaping to a better life. Yet the guilt over this one man and his two orphaned daughters makes him rethink all of his plans.

More than just the story of a young thief’s mission to atone for his crimes, though, 55 is an adventure through the busy streets of Mumbai. There’s so much to see as 55 and the others go about their daily life: bustling markets and stunning buildings and the lives inside apartment windows and crowded train stations and people sleeping on the streets at night. It’s a gritty drama about crime and redemption—but it’s also a visually striking journey through one of the busiest cities in the world.

Despite its chaotic urban setting, 55 is a thoughtful, dramatic story, following one boy’s fight for more than just survival—to be more than just the money in his pocket. It’s often a heavy story, but it’s also a gripping one.

You can join 55 and the others as the battle for survival on the streets when 55 comes to theaters on August 29, 2025.
