Read by Megan Tusing
Every school has its share of politics and drama—whether parents are bickering over a bake sale or the next school celebration. And in the audio edition of The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association by Caitlin Rozakis, one family learns that private schools in magical communities are no different.
The story finds Vivian and her husband, Daniel, struggling to adjust to life in a new community after their daughter, Aria, is bitten by a werewolf. Life in their posh new magical community is challenging enough, but it gets even more difficult when Aria starts kindergarten at Grimoire Grammar School—an ultra-competitive private school for magical children. Vivian tries to fit into their new community—even joining the Parent Advisory Committee. But when hellhounds and demons start wreaking havoc on school events—and the neighbors start to blame Aria—Vivian sets out in search of answers.
At first glance, this audiobook may seem like another playful children’s story about a school for magical kids. Instead, it tells the story from a completely different perspective—following not the outsider kid who’s struggling to fit in but the outsider parents who are trying to navigate the private school politics while also trying to do what’s best for a child with abilities that they just don’t understand. While the story is filled with spells and mythical creatures and other magical mayhem—all revolving around a centuries-old prophecy that may or may not be coming true—there’s also something about it that feels so universal.
Vivian is just another mom who feels like she’s in over her head—who’s dealing with school politics and queen bees and ridiculous expectations. And the fact that she’s doing so in a magical community, where the other moms are sirens and mages and creatures of the underworld, just makes it all feel clever and whimsical. Vivian is such a relatable character. She doesn’t always make the right choices, and she’s way too hard on herself—but she’s just trying to do the best she can for her daughter. Readers will feel for her while enjoying the action and humor of her adventures in this magical new community while trying to fit in with the magical moms.
You don’t have to have a werewolf kid to appreciate this fun-filled audiobook. If you’ve ever brought the wrong thing to the potluck...or said the wrong thing to the queen bee mom...or just felt like you didn’t belong, you’ll enjoy this satirical look at one mom’s quest to help her family fit into a new community.
