Before anyone thinks Armageddon is upon us, I did really listen to a country CD. Now it has been widely discussed by religious scholars that one of the seven signs of the apocalypse was when I admitted to liking a country song. Well, I liked a whole CD, and the planet Earth is still intact. What could make me lay down such a statement? None other than my favorite politically-incorrect author/musician, Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys with their album, Old Testaments and New Revelations.

Richard “Kinky” Big Dick Friedman (no lie, he really signs his name this way) and his band have had a musical career spanning from 1964 to the present. This compilation disc covers his career through 1992. Now, most people figure country is twangy, whiney music about pick-up trucks, dead dogs, evil women, and bar fights. Kinky does not fall into that rut. All of his songs have a strong sense of humor. Take the song “Ballad of Charles Whitman.” It’s about an architect who goes on a shooting spree from the 27th floor. He got up in the morning, grabbed his guns, smiled sweetly, and shot everyone in his school. It sounds like a horrible song, but the music is so light and fun.

Kinky is not known for being politically correct. His music embodies this lock, stock, and barrel. Songs entitled “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed,” “Why Do You Bob Your Nose, Girl?,” “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore,” and “Waitret, Please, Waitret.” Songs that cover the gambit of religion, a woman’s place in the world, and sex. Racy and fun. What more can you ask for?

His music should come with a parental advisory. Kinky has a strong love of certain “F” bombs and sophomoric sexual innuendoes. Maybe that’s why I liked it so much. The music is well played with lyrics that put a smile on your face. If I had the space, I’d share some great lyrics, but since I can’t narrow them down to a select few, you’ll just have to order his CD. Be sure to check out his web site, KinkyFriedman.com. While you're there, order one of his cigars. They’re pretty tasty.
