I don’t know what it is about this CD, but I can listen to it over and over. That’s high praise from someone who’s gotten musically ADD from using my CD burner to make mixes.

Maybe I never get tired of this CD because the lyrics are so meaty without being obscure. Maybe it’s the range of emotion—from the haunting “Birds and Ships” (sung by Natalie Merchant) to the fun “Hoodoo Voodoo” (nonsense song written by Woody Guthrie for his kids) to the quirky “Christ for President.” Then again maybe it’s the largely acoustic music itself and the vocals—chosen with the perfect light folk/rock touch to complete each song.

Like I said, I don’t know exactly what it is about this CD, but I do know it’s a CD I would replace right away if anything happened to my copy. And I know that Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, which I’ve also heard and is just as good as the first CD, is right at the top of my “to buy” list.
