I have never been one to think I could find an album that I really liked at a chain store. Usually all one finds is a slew of top 40, regurgitated ‘NSYNC posers. Staff writer, Cory Dams, emailed me about a great CD on sale at Target. The Exies’ album, Inertia, was on sale, just as Cory had said. But would it be any good? As Cory would put it: “It was DAMStastic!”
Inertia is a powerful disc. “My Goddess,” the lead track off the disc has been played moderately on harder rock stations. It is a great song with strong vocals. Usually, great radio songs lead to a lackluster compilation of dull, unoriginal songs. That statement is for The Vines, though -- not The Exies. Each song is original and fun. The driving force of percussionist Dennis Wolfe and bassist Freddy Herrera really keep the music flowing. Vocalist Scott Stevens blends in with the incredible guitar work of David Walsh. The guys are tight and full of true musical talent.
Their talent has a wide range of depth. A little bit of soul, as heard in the song “Lo-Fi,” a bit of a sarcasm, as in the song “Genius,” help round out their real rocking ability. I was captivated from beginning to end. And that’s hard to do since my adult onset of ADD. (What was I just saying?)
If you love a hard rocking band that doesn’t just sound like a repackaged Blink 182, I recommend you buy Inertia immediately. It’s a breath of fresh air to find a young band with talent.
